Zirconium Pill Getter & Zirconium Tube Getter

Our Zirconium Getter is based on the principle of metallic surface sorption of gas molecules. The material used for our product is a powdery Zirconium-Vanadium-Iron alloy, showing excellent sorption characteristics. We offer two typs: Powder which is pressed into pills (ZPG) and powder filled in getter tubes (ZTG).

Our Zirconium Pill Getter (ZPG) and Zirconium Tube Getter (ZTG) are important tools for improving the performance of many vacuum systems. The following diagram illustrates the development of the pressure in a vacuum vessel with and without the usage of a getter.


Our Zirconium getter works preferable at high temperatures between 150 and 250°C. The surface of the material forms a passivation layer in contact with ambient air conditions at room temperature. Therefore the getters are stable and can easily be handled under ambient air condition. To activate its performance, the getter must be heated under vacuum conditions. This activation process could be carried out at temperatures of about 450°C, depending on heating time.
According to its properties, the zirconium getter preferably could be used in any applications in which the activation of the getter could be carried out simultaneously to the bakeout procedure of the vacuum system. In this case the ZPG and ZTG could act as an in-situ pump to minimize pumping time.

We are testing the performance of our getter similiar to the ASTM standard F 798-97 (2002). Hereby we measure the pumping speed and
sorption capacity of our Zirconium getter for different gases and at different working temperatures. The tests are carried out at temperatures from 75°C up to 250°C and a pressure of 10 -6 mbar. With the ZPG getter solution we reach excellent sorption capacities at higher temperatures. It is an excellent solution for sealed-off vacuum devices which require vacuum levels in the range lower than 10 -5 mbar over extended periods of time. The following diagram shows the specific sorption capacity of the ZPG at different temperatures.



The sorption capacity for Hydrogen of our getter depends on the operating temperature and is in the range of 120 to 200 mbar*l/g. The sorption behaviour for Hydrogen at 200°C is illustrated in the diagram above. It shows the gettering rate G versus the sorbed quantity C of the getter.
The chemical composition of our ternary getter Zr-V-Fe-alloy is:

Zr (Zirconium) 70,0%
V (Vanadium) 24,6%
Fe (Iron) 5,4%

The ZPG is used in many transfer lines for heated oil or gases. The main residual gas in most cases is H2. The ZPG is specially designed to absorb high amounts of H2 during it’s lifetime. The ZPG is specially constructed for vacuum insulated transfer lines (solar receivers), dewar and high vacuum insulation for higher temperatures.
